From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is familiar, its meaning for the continent's defense are essential to grasp.

In the view of the president and his adherents—a group that includes tech magnate Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the European Union—all politics is fundamentally a deal. But, whereas he once claimed was about burden-sharing, the new claim is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy because of its embrace of multiculturalism.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

In his interview, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and by publicly highlighting the rifts between Washington and European capitals, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European unity—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at perhaps the most critical juncture for Europe since WWII, with a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions elsewhere on the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Kyiv amid persistent threats of U.S. withdrawal, the peril is that Trump has rationalized a justifying narrative for ignoring his allies.

This situation demands a firm reaction from European leadership. Although certain leaders, such as Germany's leader, have been blunt in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a strategy of attempting to appease the White House.

Recently, the UK government refused to criticize Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

The spokesperson stated, "He has a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on cooperating with each to deliver better outcomes for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that Trump means what he says and repeats what he means consistently. It is past time to abandon the pretense otherwise.
