Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
