Israelis mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations continue
People have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel answered by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.
A senior representative involved in the discussions indicated that an late session of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The source explained the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "tough and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies deliveries
- Future management of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people congregated to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester one woman remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israelis desire the conflict to finish in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli attacks carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the evening arrives, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis said two more victims had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers stated.
