Jailhouse Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He battled the law and the law won.

Sixty days following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last appears jail-bound.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who's been subject to residential detention in his residence while a number of legal procedures and appeals play out – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst mounting rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.

Historical Statements on Inmates

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right former military man showed scant compassion for the country's prison population.

“What’s the need to provide these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish in prison, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Facility Debate

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent effort to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, stated he expected the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the consequence of a near-fatal knife attack during the 2018 presidential political campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His health is highly critical. He will not be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells containing 40 detainees: “That’s almost one meter squared per prisoner.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they protest, naturally, of the horrible food,” added the senator.

Allies Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the lone figure expressing views prior to the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.

Writing in a prominent publication, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an unfairness that eats away the hearts of countless people in Brazil,” he stated.

Varied Public Reaction

It is possibly true due to the significant backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his anticipated incarceration has also warmed the spirits of millions other people who think he ought to be incarcerated for conspiring to stop the incoming president from becoming president – and also plotting to have him murdered.

Congressman Otoni, a politician for the current president's Workers’ party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to get proper handling – but dignified treatment while incarcerated. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have long praising the tough treatment of convicts, had suddenly realized to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always asserted that basic rights should not be for criminals – decided to tour a penitentiary to discover what circumstances are really like,” he said.

“The former president is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting treatment”.

Potential Jail Conditions

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about thousands of detainees, his more likely destination seems to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.

According to information, the room Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – roughly the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter bathroom with a shower and a 130 square foot veranda. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a TV and also a minibar in his room as long as they were provided by his family,” information suggested.
