Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Rebuke
Individuals from both sides of the political divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
This is a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
A number of GOP elected officials also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his party to justify the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the shooting of a different political figure.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
