The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, disclosed that he will independently develop this new flavor within an individual collection highlighting causes the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism and Recent Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
