When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
