The artist has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the Britain's grassroots music venues.

He was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his new release the album was named the best record of the previous year.

He has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the crucial part local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his live tour to help numerous local spots across Britain.

The donation assisted spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues caused by floods, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted funding support in improving infrastructure and gear that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The concept that funds from performances in major spaces helps the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

The musician is among several artists to give his award prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when they won the prize in 1996 for their record the album, frontman the singer announced that the act would donate their prize money to the organization the charity.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her bounty between several charities, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the youth organization that supported their act, in addition to other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients the group gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," stated singer Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had protected two small stages in south-east England, by bringing them into public stewardship.

The first in that area and The Croft in the city were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "shares" in the venues.
