Thrice-crowned Most Valuable Player Jokic suffers a 'heartbreaking' leg setback.
Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" knee injury as the Nuggets fell 147-123 to the Miami Heat.
The star player was hurt late in the first half during an unintentional coming together with team-mate Spencer Jones.
His teammate came down on the foot of the MVP, who promptly collapsed to the court clutching his leg.
The star, that tops the NBA season in boards and dimes, had a score of 21 points and eight assists in the matchup prior to sustaining the setback.
He is scheduled for an scan on the following day to determine the severity of the injury.
"Immediately, he realized there was a problem," said Denver head coach David Adelman.
"This is part of the NBA. Whoever that suffers an injury, it's gut-wrenching, especially a player as talented as Jokic. We'll find out more tomorrow."
"The team will adjust as a team. Of course, currently, I'm more concerned just about him personally and the disappointment of facing a situation of that nature."
